Southern Highlands Netball Competition

Southern Highlands Netball Competition

Thirty five of our students from Year 2 to Year 10 played in SHCS teams in the Southern Highlands Netball Competition this year. Our girls had a great season on the courts and benefited enormously from the contribution of their coaches, team managers and parents throughout the season. Thanks to our coaches and managers for their support of our teams this year: coaches Mrs Hayes, Mrs Foster, Mrs Austin, Lily, Adiel; and managers Mrs Boyan, Mrs Wilms, Ms Glanville and Mrs Reid. Our girls have developed their netball skills, shown commitment to their team and displayed great sportsmanship on the court. Congratulations to all of our players!...
Year 12 Service to SHCS

Year 12 Service to SHCS

Year 12 had their last ever service lesson for “Operation 4:19”. Inspired from the bible verse in Philippians 4:19 “My God shall provide all your needs through the riches of Jesus”, Year 12 students have an opportunity to provide acts of service to the school, teaching them to be givers and not just receivers in their school community. This year’s Year 12 planted the trees donated by last Year’s Year 12. Fantastic team work. These students will be missed!!!...

New Technology for Years 5 and 6

In the past “keeping up with the Jones’ ” has been a philosophy from which some try and steer away. Stage 3 (Year 5 and 6) have just acquired a set of Google Chrome books. Theses new laptops are part of a trial to introduce new technologies into the classroom that enhance and promote learning. Mr Jenkinson and Mr Straughan have been leading the trial and are excited about the new opportunities these laptops bring to their lessons. And they aren’t the only excited ones…..        ...

A Musical Afternoon

A Musical Afternoon

Music is an important part of the school curriculum, with all Year 3 students at Southern Highlands Christian School receiving small group lessons on an instrument of their choice (violin, flute, cello, clarinet), included in the school fees. Mrs Koek (teacher of Music) said that this year’s Year 3 students, who are just embarking on the instrument program this semester, were excited to have to opportunity to learn a musical instrument. After this semester, students have the opportunity to pay for private lessons with a music tutor during school hours, which alleviates parents of the stress of getting children to after-school music lessons. Year 3-6 students who have already been receiving private music tuition at school, showcased their talent last week in an afternoon for parents.  ...
A great night at Op Shop Ball

A great night at Op Shop Ball

How does Southern Highlands Christian School make an assessment fun? They turn it into an evening ball! One of the subject areas for PDHPE (Personal Development, Health and Physical Education) is dance. Students are taught several dance routines and are assessed on the outcome. To take this one step further and provide a practical application for the learned skill, the school decided to hold a formal ball last term, so the students had a real life scenario in which to practice their newfound talent. In keeping the costs minimal to parents, the criteria for dress was ”formal wear purchased at an op-shop”. This not only relieved parents of the stress and expense of buying a new outfit, it also helped students use their creativity while supporting local charities....
